U.S. President Donald Trump lauded the “resolute and formidable” leadership of India and Pakistan for securing a ceasefire, describing their courageous decision as a legacy-defining moment. He added that he will work with both the nations to arrive at a solution on Kashmir.
The agreement, reached on Saturday, halts hostilities along the Line of Control and International Border.
In a Truth Social post, Trump wrote, “I commend the resolute and formidable leadership of India and Pakistan for their wisdom, strength, and courage in recognising the need to end the recent aggression, which could have caused immense loss of life and devastation. Millions of innocent lives were at stake! Your bold actions have elevated your legacy.”
He added, “I’m proud that the USA played a pivotal role in this historic and heroic outcome. Though not yet discussed, I plan to significantly boost trade with both great nations. I also aim to collaborate with you to explore a resolution to the Kashmir issue after ‘a thousand years.’ God bless the leadership of India and Pakistan for a job well done!!!”
Tensions between the two nations escalated following India’s strikes on terrorist launchpads in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) last week, in retaliation for the 22 April 2025 Pahalgam terror attack.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri announced that the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan agreed to cease all military actions—on land, air, and sea—effective from 17:00 IST on Saturday.
Misri’s concise statement followed Trump’s claim that India and Pakistan had agreed to a “full and immediate ceasefire.”
The Indian government clarified that the DGMOs directly negotiated the understanding to end hostilities. Notably, the first indication of the ceasefire emerged from Washington, with Trump asserting U.S. mediation, rather than from New Delhi or Islamabad.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed gratitude to Trump and the United States for “enabling this outcome,” which he said Pakistan accepted to promote regional peace and stability.
Trump’s Truth Social announcement, posted approximately 30 minutes before Misri’s, mirrored his 2019 claim of mediating a ceasefire and securing the release of Indian Air Force pilot Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, which he publicised before India’s official statement.
A U.S. State Department press release described the agreement as a “U.S.-brokered ceasefire between India and Pakistan,” reinforcing Washington’s role in facilitating the de-escalation amid the recent flare-up sparked by the Pahalgam attack and subsequent military exchanges.
