Iran’s government declared on Tuesday that it has taken “necessary measures” to safeguard its nuclear programme following devastating U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on its key facilities.
The announcement comes amid a fragile ceasefire, as the region grapples with the fallout of a 12-day conflict that has rattled West Asia and raised fears of a broader war.
Mohammad Eslami, head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization, addressed the nation on state television, asserting, “We are assessing the damage from the attacks and have plans in place to restart our facilities. Our strategy ensures that production and services face no disruption.”
The U.S. targeted Iran’s uranium enrichment sites at Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan on Sunday, with President Donald Trump hailing the strikes as a “spectacular military success.” The full extent of the damage remains unclear.
An adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei struck a defiant note, stating, “Iran still holds enriched uranium reserves, and this is far from over.” Israel, meanwhile, escalated its campaign on Monday, bombing the heavily fortified Fordo facility, buried beneath a mountain south of Tehran, to “block access routes,” according to Israeli officials.
The conflict, which began on June 13, has drawn in regional players. On Tuesday, Iraq reported suicide drone attacks on radar systems at two military bases—Camp Taji near Baghdad and Imam Ali Base in Dhi Qar province. Military spokesman Sabah al-Numan called the strikes “cowardly and treacherous,” noting that Iraqi forces thwarted several other attempts. No group has claimed responsibility, and Iraqi authorities are yet to identify the perpetrators.
Iran accused Israel of continuing strikes on its soil until Tuesday morning, with a military spokesperson telling state TV, “The Zionist regime launched three waves of attacks by 9:00 AM today.” The claims came despite U.S. President Trump announcing a ceasefire, which both Iran and Israel accepted on Tuesday after Tehran’s limited retaliatory missile strike on a U.S. base in Qatar.
