Former US Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, has urged the Trump administration to urgently reset relations with India, cautioning that current tensions risk undermining efforts to counter China’s global ambitions.
Haley stresses India’s role in countering China
Haley, in a recent opinion piece, highlighted that Washington’s punitive measures — including a 25% tariff on Indian goods and additional duties for New Delhi’s purchase of Russian oil — have pushed ties to a breaking point. She warned that alienating India, the world’s largest democracy, would be a “strategic disaster,” particularly as China strengthens its influence worldwide.
Haley underlined that India must be seen as a “prized free and democratic partner,” not treated as an adversary akin to China, which has so far avoided US sanctions for its Russian oil imports despite being one of Moscow’s largest buyers.
Strategic, economic and defence significance of India
According to Haley, India’s role extends beyond diplomacy, offering Washington critical leverage in shifting supply chains away from China. She argued that India’s manufacturing potential in sectors like textiles, smartphones, and solar panels makes it uniquely positioned to complement US economic goals.
On defence ties, she noted India’s growing cooperation with US allies such as Israel and its importance as a market for American defence equipment. She also emphasized New Delhi’s expanding influence in the Middle East, calling it vital for regional stability as the US seeks to reduce its military footprint.
India’s rise as a global counterweight
Haley pointed to India’s long-term demographic and economic strengths, noting that it surpassed China as the world’s most populous nation in 2023. With a young workforce and the fastest-growing major economy, India’s rise represents one of the most significant geopolitical shifts of recent decades.
“Simply put, China’s ambitions will have to shrink as India’s power grows. Yet, unlike Communist-controlled China, the rise of a democratic India does not threaten the free world,” she wrote.
Haley, who served as UN ambassador from 2017 to 2018 and was the first Indian American in a presidential cabinet, has remained a vocal critic of Donald Trump despite endorsing his 2024 presidential bid.
